2nd Quarter Moon Phase – start really early seeds

The second quarter moon phase extends through Monday  – so if you want to get an early start on seed starting, now is a good time so seeds germinate quickly.

What do we start now … tomatoes if you want to set them out in walls-o-water to get a jump on the warm weather (although this year we many not need to 🙂  We also start marigolds from seed, because they love hot weather and take a bit of time to get big, starting them now will give you a longer marigold season.

I started some tomatoes, cantalope, and watermelon today. Tomorrow I will plant some of the pawpaw seeds I saved from last fall.

Great Steve .. we will start our tomatoes and marigolds next weekend. Look forward to hearing how the paw paw seeds do.

What does the new USDA map mean for us? Can I plant those orange groves now?

Not warm enough to grow oranges here yet (unless you have a heated greenhouse). We have gone from being in zone 7a to zone 7b. Which means our frost free date moves up a week or two, and our first frost date gets pushed back about the same. The expected max cold range for zone 7a is from 0 to 5 degrees F. Zone 7b is from 5 to 10 degrees F. So you can see we are looking at about a 5 degree difference. There are so many micro climates in this area, we really have had both 7a and 7b zones for as long as I can remember. Bottom line, little less cold, little longer growing season.
